Through a turn of events, a strange artifact places an unusual power inside the museum, which brings the statues and figures inside to life. Storyline: In New York, unemployed and divorced Larry Daley is a complete loser. Even then, that doesn't begin to chronicle his entire career, which started with his family's vaudeville act and consequently also included a number of stage and radio roles. Larry ends up as the only night security guard in the museum. The man who's been forever waiting for his moment of greatness just found it.
Larry accepts the job of night watchman in the Museum of Natural History and takes the place of three old security guards that have just retired in order to raise some money and pay his bills. Security guard Larry Daley infiltrates the Smithsonian Institution in order to rescue Jedediah and Octavius, who have been shipped to the museum by mistake. Larry tries desperately to keep the museum under control, but he's fighting a losing battle. Among some of the more unusual figures which come to life every night during Larry's watch is a skeletal tyrannosaurus nicknamed Rexy. On his first shift, Larry soon realizes that everything at the museum is not as it seems as the statues begin to come to life after the sun sets. Facing the possibility of losing his job and letting down his son Nick yet again, Larry must wage an incredible battle to save the museum, hoping to become at last the bold, adventurous dad he's always wanted to be. Larry is newly divorced and having trouble holding down a steady job.
It seems the trio have been planning to rob the museum of some of its more valuable artifacts. The movie also incorporates an underlying story involving the retired security guard and his two colleagues who were dismissed. The Museum transforms into complete chaos with the inexperienced Larry in charge as he learns that an old Egyptian stone that came to the Museum in 1950 brings these statues to life until dawn. At his wit's end, Larry must recruit the help of historical heavyweight Teddy Roosevelt just to survive the night. A newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreak havoc. His son Nick is very disappointed with his father who is going to be evicted.

When Larry brings his son to spend a night with him, the three old guards break into the Museum to try to steal the magical stone. He is handed an over-sized flashlight and a dog-eared instruction manual, then left all alone in the eerily quiet, cavernous museum. Amidst the fun and frivolity in the museum at night there is also mischief in the form of an annoying monkey who does not like Larry and a figure of Attila the Hun who constantly chases Larry through the museum. .
